Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Dimensions

We believe that enjoyable and challenging learning activities in a small supportive setting help promote the psychological wellbeing that may play an important role in recovery. Our main aim however is always the well-being of the child and we know there are times when children in hospital need to put school work to one side and focus on recreation and relaxation. We are always there to support at such times.

In addition to weekly PSHE and Citizenship and Religious Studies sessions, pupils participate in a  'Collective Time' that challenges them to think about themselves and the world they live in. Through topical 'Picture News' posters they develop an understanding of social and economic issues facing people in other countries and the world in general. Examples of topic coverage are attached below. Staff use the 'Philosophy 4 Children' enquiry based learning model:

"Children learn that their ideas have value, and that the ideas of other children have value too. Through Philosophy for Children they realise that they don’t always have to be right, but they gain the confidence to ask questions and learn through discussion."

Objectives around the teaching of British Values are incorproated into each weekly Collective Time session.

The school has a well developed 'Life and Leisure' programme. Day school students will be entered for AQA Unit Awards in: Sport & Health Related Exercise, City Farm Project, Script Writing for a Play, Live TV Broadcasting, Personal Finance, Learning a Musical Instrument.  All newly written Units have been submitted and verified by AQA.

Further Vocational Options now include Live TV Broadcasting & Personal Finance. The latter will involve use of computerised spread-sheets and Databases. This will lead to Level 3 AQA Accreditation.

We continue to develop new Creative Arts projects through our associaition with the Cultural Commissioner Model called 'Camden Spark' – as well as regular visits to The Roundhouse in Camden a number of workshops take place every year including October Gallery, Saatchi Gallery, House of Illustration and the Museum of Childhood.

The children also explore coding and the enigma machine through visiting workshops from Bletchley Park.
