The Royal Free Hospital Children's School (RFHCS) is a community Special School for pupils aged 5 to 16. We are a leading practice school for Mental Health and Well Being.

We provide education for children who are inpatients or day patients on the paediatric wards or within the Royal Free Intensive Eating Disorder Service. We also have a limited number of places on our GCSE ‘Day School’ programme; for children who are not currently inpatients at the hospital but who would benefit from attending the school on a full or part-time, daily basis. The school manages the delivery of medical needs home tuition for the local authority, Camden.

We operate within a multidisciplinary framework; working closely with a range of professionals including consultant doctors, mental health professionals, physiotherapists, speech therapists and other agencies.

14% of school children have a long term medical condition and an estimated 125,000 UK children miss more than 14 school days per year meaning most hospitals have an education provision. Education is a key ingredient in the recovery process and plays an important part in the hospital experience of children and young people by maintaining a sense of normality in the hospital environment. Education facilities in hospitals also play an important role in helping to maintain links between the pupil, home tuition and the mainstream school environments, thereby ensuring as much continuity of education as possible.
